The Five Bits (Aug. 28-Sept. 3): Team Thor, Squirrel Girl, Happy Hogan, Deathstroke, and Stranger Things

The last edition of the summer...

(P.S. There's a short blog update at the end of this post. Read it. Or don't. I'm not your boss.)

1.  That Team Thor Video

I'm sure, Marvel fan or not, you've seen or heard of this by now. But it's so great, I had to give it a shout-out.

First shown at Comic-Con, this short gives us a glimpse into what Thor was up to during the events of Civil War. Spoilers: He was living in Australia with a guy named Daryl.

The short was directed by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, and obviously evokes the mockumentary style he used for What We Do in the Shadows, a film I highly recommend, by the way. (Maybe that's the next "May I Recommend" post?)

2.  New Warriors Show in Development...featuring Squirrel Girl!

TVLine is reporting that ABC and Marvel have begun working on a comedy series centered on the teenage super team, the New Warriors. More importantly, the series will apparently be led by Doreen Green herself, Squirrel Girl.

It's about time, huh?

Even though finally getting Squirrel Girl in the MCU is pretty exciting, I don't want Marvel to get too ahead of themselves when it comes to their TV projects. I mean, they've got Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones already. Luke Cage is out at the end of the month. Then there's Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher and new seasons for all those shows. Plus, Cloak and Dagger, The Runaways, and now New Warriors. That's a pretty full slate, so better get to work there Marvel.

By the way, since it seems like Anna Kendrick is out of the question to play Squirrel Girl, I'm totally in favour of Shannon Purser (aka Barb from Stranger Things).

3.  Happy Hogan Returns!

We all remember Happy Hogan, right? Tony Stark's bodyguard from the Iron Man trilogy, played by Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau? Yeah, him. Well, he's coming back!

Favreau will be reprising the role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, alongside best buddy Robert Downey Jr. as Stark. Not much is known about his role beyond that, so that's basically all I got for you on this one.

Still, Happy was a surprisingly likable character in the Iron Man films, especially in 3, even though he was nearly blown up and all that jazz.

4.  Deathstroke is the Batman Solo Film Villain

Ben Affleck tweeted out some test footage last week that revealed that Deathstroke will be the villain in his Batman solo film.

It's an interesting choice, since usually one might go for the likes of the Joker or the Penguin, but that doesn't mean it's a bad one. I'm sure Slade will be more than a match for the Caped Crusader.

As for who will play the legendary mercenary, nothing is confirmed, but Joe Manganiello is the fan-favourite.

At least now we know why Arrow can't use their best character anymore.

5.  Stranger Things Gets a Second Season

Finally, in news that probably surprised, like, no one, Netflix announced that they have renewed Stranger Things for a second season. Woop!

The Duffer Brothers, the creators of the series, have dropped a lot of hints about Season 2, such as how it will expand the show's mythology, introduce a new mystery girl, and we'll finally get #JusticeForBarb.

Also, we got this teaser, which I think reveals the episode titles for the next season.

Season 2 will premiere some time next summer.

Alright, mini-update time. I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm officially back in school. This year is looking like it may be busier than the last, so all I ask is that you bear with me if reviews and posts don't arrive on time. There'll be another update later on about how I'm going to be doing my TV reviews this year, so stay tuned.

And, hey, the one-year birthday of this blog is coming up fast. I should do something special.

Thanks, guys.

Noah
