(This is a new "series" that won't be as frequent as ones like "The Five Bits." Basically, anytime I watch a movie or show that completely blows me away, I'll gush about it here. First up, a show you probably haven't stopped hearing about.)
Guys, the hype is real. Stranger Things is amazing.
The series is set in 1983 in Indiana, and revolves around the disappearance of a boy named Will Byers. Several investigations are launched by his friends, his family and local sheriff Jim Hopper, and they all soon realize that Will's vanishing may have been the work of supernatural forces. Also, there's a young girl named Eleven who completely steals the show.
On top of being an homage to the films and culture of the 80's, Stranger Things is also just really darn great. You've got a compelling and intricately built storyline, well-developed and well-written characters, great performances (even from the child actors), and some truly emotional and intense storytelling. It's also very creative. You can see tiny influences from all sorts of 80's films (ie. ET, The Goonies, etc.), but it never fells like it's ripping them off. It's something original! *Gasp*
Also, if you are planning to sit down and watch it at some point, avoid any sort of spoilers like the plague. Going in completely (or mostly) enhances the experience infinitely with this one.
Watch it if you like: 80's movies. The 80's in general. Mysteries. Sci-fi. Sci-fi mysteries. Being at the edge of your seat. Bracing yourself for jump-scares. Eggos. Dungeons and Dragons. Christmas lights. Jean-Ralphio from Parks and Recreation. Great television.
Also, yes, I've given the blog a Stranger Things overhaul. Don't worry, it won't be forever. I do like the idea of a revolving theme, though...
Make your own Stranger Things title card here.
