The Five Bits (June 26-July 2): Star Trek Beyond, Wreck-it-Ralph, The Flash, Squirrel Girl, and Star Wars Rebels

It was a bit of a slow news week, but I guess it's just the calm before the storms that are Star Wars Celebration and San Diego Comic-Con.

1.  New Star Trek Beyond Trailer (with bonus Rihanna!?)

We're almost two weeks away from the release of Star Trek Beyond, and Paramount has released the third and final trailer for the movie, which features a new single by Rihanna for the film:

OK, so...I liked the trailer...I think I like the song, and I think it and the footage were edited together very well. But...like...I just don't think a Rihanna song belongs with a Star Trek movie.  Sure, it's obviously mean to attract the hip young millennials who care more about a new Rihanna song than a new adventure with the crew of the Enterprise, but I don't think it would really make much a difference, really.

Anyway, I'm getting really pumped for Beyond. Preparing for hype mode, captain.

2.  Wreck-it-Ralph's Getting a Sequel!

Disney finally confirmed that, yes, we will be getting Wreck-it-Ralph 2. And a bit sooner than maybe some expected, with a March 2018 release date already set. That's less than 2 years away!

John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman will be back to voice Ralph and Vanellope, respectively, and the above concept art was also released, which suggests that the characters will (literally?) break the internet.

I really enjoyed the first Wreck-it-Ralph, though I wouldn't say it's one of my favourite animated films. This news, though, kind of has me itching to watch it again.

3.  Tom Felton Joins The Flash Season 3

For the past few weeks, there's been quite a bit of casting news on the Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl fronts, but The Flash has remained pretty quiet. But some pretty impressive casting news was revealed this week.

Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter) has joined Season 3 as a series regular. He'll be playing Julian Dorn, "a fellow CSI at the Central City Police Department who suspects there’s more to Barry Allen than just his good guy reputation."

The Flash's third season begins on October 4.

4.  Anna Kendrick Might Want to Play Squirrel Girl?

While promoting her new film Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Anna Kendrick was apparently asked which Marvel hero she'd be interested in playing. She mentions Squirrel Girl and talks about how her brother wants her to play her.

Of course, this is nothing to get the least bit excited over, since there's no signs of a Squirrel Girl movie on the horizon. I'd love to see one (make it a more tame, MCU version of Deadpool. Boom.), but I'm not sure Kendrick would be my first choice for the role. Would I be mad if she was (hypothetically) cast? Nuh-uh.

Side note: Squirrel Girl is my favourite  playable character in LEGO MARVEL Superheroes because she throws squirrels. She throws squirrels.

5.  Star Wars Rebels Will Tie Into Future Movies.

In "stuff we've heard before, but it's still pretty exciting" news, producer Simon Kinberg has once again confirmed that Rebels will tie into future Star Wars films.

Rogue One is the most obvious and nearest contender, given it takes place within the same time frame as Rebels. Maybe a few characters from the movie will wind up in the show? Saw Gererra seems to be the most likely, but maybe Jyn or Cassian will pop up? Maaaaaybe?

There are quite a few "maybes" in that paragraph, aren't there?
