2016 Oscars "Review" and Whatever

As of writing, this year's Oscars telecast was just last night and you know what? I thought it was fine.

Now, I haven't seen every Best Picture nominee, or every movie that came out in 2015, and I don't plan on seeing all of them (including Best Picture winner, Spotlight), so I'm not going to rant about which movie should have won this, or which actor was robbed of that. I'm just going to talk about some of the highlights of the night, the movies I'm happy won, blah blah blah. Let's do this!

Chris Rock was OK.

Chris Rock's stint as Oscar host this year seems to be getting no shortage of positive reactions. I thought a lot of his jokes were funny, and some were just not (I'm looking at you, Stacey!). Most of his bits were focused on the whole "#OscarsTooWhite" controversy, and boy did that get old after five minutes. I mean, he made some good points and some funny cracks, but then he just kept going on and on about it through the whole thing. Okay, we get it. The Oscars should be more diverse, but we shouldn't be making a big deal about it. That's all he needed to say, and that would've been a-OK.

Mad Max: Fury Road sweeps!

For a good chunk of the ceremony, Fury Road was winning everything. Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing. The only awards it was nominated for and didn't nab were Best Visual Effects (Ex Machina), Best Cinematography (The Revenant), Best Director (Alejandro G. Innaritu, The Revenant) and, of course, Best Picture (Spotlight). But for a while, I'm sure many were thinking Fury Road had a great chance of pulling an Oscar sweep ala Return of the King. Alas, it was not mean to be, but I'm sure George Miller and company were having a day, a lovely day, nonetheless.

The Force Awakens left empty-handed.

The Force Awakens didn't win any of the awards it was nominated for, and I'm okay with that. Mostly because several of them went to Mad Max, and if The Force Awakens had to lose to any movie, I'd choose Mad Max. And Star Wars still got a moment to shine when C-3P0, R2-D2, and BB-8 took the stage for a small bit about John Williams.

Stupid Minions

GO. AWAY.

A tribute to Toy Story

To clean the stage of that Minion filth, Woody and Buzz made an appearance to present the Best Animated Feature award (Inside Out. Whoop!) and to celebrate Toy Story's 20th anniversary last year. And the whole segment made me feel oh so happy.

Leonardo DiCaprio gets his Oscar

RIP Oscar-less Leo memes.

Louis CK speaks truth!

The funniest part of the show was when Louis CK came on stage to present the award for Best Documentary - Short Subject. He said it was his favourite category because it could change a life, and that the award will probably the most valuable thing the winner ever owns. Of course, in my words, it sounds like Louis' bit sounded serious. Trust me, it wasn't. It was hilarious.

(Sorry 'bout the video quality. Couldn't find a better one.)

That awesome opening supercut!
Shut up and watch it. It's awesome.

But seriously. Movies. Gotta love em'.
