The Five Bits (Feb. 21-27): Pacific Rim 2, Nicholas Meyer, Batman v Superman, Iron Fist, and Another Daredevil Trailer

I think this is the first Five Bits in a while that doesn't feature anything Star Wars related. Enjoy it.

1. Pacific Rim 2 is a Go!

After being stuck in development hell for a year or two now, Pacific Rim 2 is finally moving forward. Unfortunately, Guillermo del Toro won't be back to direct the sequel. His replacement is former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, which is exciting. Will this first-time director be able to make the jump from small-scale, street-level violence to large-scale, global-level violence?

I'm a casual fan of the first Pacific Rim film. I've only seen it once, but I enjoyed myself immensely with it, so I'm still excited for this. I just hope the sequel isn't a complete retread of the original, and that seems almost likely when the main draw is robots punching monsters. We'll have to wait and see where this goes.

2. Nicholas Meyer Beams Aboard the New Star Trek series

Bryan Fuller has announced that Star Trek legend Nicholas Meyer has joined the new Star Trek series as a writer and a producer. Exciting, huh?

What's that? Who's Nicholas Meyer? He's just the guy who helped make three of the best original Star Trek films. He directed Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country, and wrote The Voyage Home

So yeah, recruiting him to join the new series is a pretty big deal.

3. Batman V. Superman's Getting an R-Rated Director's Cut

Batman V. Superman is getting an R-rated director's cut with the release of an "Ultimate Edition" DVD. The R was bequeathed by a film board because there's gonna be some more violence in this version of the film.

Look, this is probably happening because of Deadpool. It just seems a bit too convenient that this was revealed as Deadpool currently rules the box office. And to me, I'm not sure the R-rating is the best move. I mean, this is a movie with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in it. Three icons of children's entertainment. And you're slapping an R-rating on it? I'm sure the version that will be released theatrically will be PG-13, but if I were a parent and I found out about this, I'd reconsider taking my kid along to this.

But that's just me.

4. We've Got Ourselves an Iron Fist!

Marvel and Netflix have found the actor to play Iron Fist in Game of Thrones' Finn Jones (hey, that rhymes!).

I think Jones looks like a fine choice. I've never seen Game of Thrones (and don't really plan to), so I can't yet give my thumbs-up performance-wise.

Iron Fist will Marvel and Netflix's fourth series for the streaming service. It's probably coming out in 2017 at some point, so there's still some time until we see Jones in action as Iron Fist.

5.  Daredevil Season 2 Trailer, Part 2

The second part of the two-part trailer (still stupid) for the second season of Daredevil is out, with Elodie Yung's Elektra as the focus:

Is that a new suit, Matt? Kinda liked the old one better.

March 18th, bro.
