How awesome does "LEGO Dimensions" look? For those not in the know, it's LEGO's crack at the "toys-to-life" video game concept. With the purchase of the video game, players get a buildable, physical toy pad/portal as well as three minifigures; Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle (from The LEGO Movie). Once one of the figures is placed on the pad, it appears in the game. Additional characters can be bought separately and usually unlock new content in-game. It's not a new concept, but still one we all can admit is still pretty cool.
The real draw of the game to many is the handful of brands the game features and the idea of having them crossover with each other. The game features franchises we've seen LEGO-fied in games before (ie. Batman, The Lord of the Rings, Jurassic World, The LEGO Movie, etc.) as well as new ones (ie. Back to the Future, Portal, Ghostbusters, and, of course Doctor Who). Any playable character from any of the available brands can be teamed up with any other character and can mess around in any brand's "world." So, you can team up Marty McFly with Emmet and fight the Riddler at Minas Tirith.
Any nerd who read that sentence is nodding their head and grinning.
I don't own the game for one simple, justifiable reason: It's too darn expensive! I don't want to bore you with a list of prices and my current financial situation, so I'll just say if I went out and bought a compatible console, the game, as well as the expansion packs I wanted, I''d probably be paying well over $600. Yeah. Until I strike oil, I'm perfectly content with watching footage of other people playing and enjoying it.
To finally get to the point of this post, the game's Doctor Who expansion pack was released yesterday. Yes, it's glorious. Just look at it's take on the title sequence...
Spot all 13 Doctors? Found everyone but the War Doctor, but perhaps that was intentional?
One of the many reasons I love LEGO games is that the people who make them always prove that they're fans of these movies/shows too, and Doctor Who is no exception. There's a level where the Twelfth Doctor faces off against Davros and the Daleks. All 13 Doctors are playable. Peter Capaldi voices the Twelfth Doctor and the voices of all the other Doctors come from archive audio. Every TARDIS interior is featured, even Paul McGann's steampunk one , John Hurt's briefly glimpsed one (with a cameo from the Moment), and Tom Baker's wooden one.
There are also easter eggs. EVERYWHERE. From the Twelfth Doctor referencing past adventures to just tiny details in the locations and character animations (ie. the Tenth Doctor's severed hand in a jar within his TARDIS, the Eighth Doctor's happy dance over his comfortable shoes).
This just proves that a LEGO Doctor Who game is an exciting idea. I'd buy that in a heartbeat (or two), especially since it could be something I could afford.
In the meantime, I can just watch gameplay videos and open a "Dimensions" savings fund.
