This morning, CBS announced that they were developing a new Star Trek TV series currently set to premiere in January 2017. Seems fitting, considering it's just after the franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary. Alex Kurtzman, who had a hand in producing and writing two of the reboot films (Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness), will serve as showrunner.
I could definitely see the series going the Agents of SHIELD route and being set in the same timeline as the new films and make connections with them. Maybe we'll be getting Agents of Starfleet? Or it could boldly go to an entirely new (or final) frontier, exploring a part of the Trek universe no one was expecting (Klingons, perhaps?). But, right now, it seems more sensible to expect the classic pitch of a starship crew seeking out new civilizations.
This is super exciting, even though I'm not a die-hard Trekkie. I've seen all the movies and a handful of episodes from The Original Series and The Next Generation, but I enjoy Star Trek at a very casual level. I can only imagine how full-throttle Trekkies are reacting to this news.
I'm really looking forward to hearing more details on this. Can't wait!
