In case you missed it, or just didn’t read the title of this post, Peter Capaldi will be leaving Doctor Who, along with showrunner Steven Moffat, with the 2017 Christmas special.
Of course, the actor playing the Doctor leaving is nothing new or surprising, but I expect that Christmas special to destroy me emotionally.
I started watching/obsessing over Doctor Who by watching David Tennant and Matt Smith’s runs. The announcement that Smith was leaving was made right in the middle of my initial watch through the series. When Capaldi was announced as the new Doctor, I was hesitant since I was used to the younger Doctors, but I remained optimistic. Two seasons into Capaldi’s run and he’s pretty much my favourite Doctor now. I tweeted this just after this news broke, but he embodies what I see as my ideal Doctor: no nonsense, yet compassionate and charming. He can be your best friend just as quickly as he could call you a “pudding brain” for doing something idiotic.
Besides the obvious one, “Who is the next Doctor?”, the news also raises the question of if Bill and Nardole will be back for Series 11. On one hand, Chris Chibnall might want to start fresh; on the other, I think at least Pearl Mackie deserves more than one season to strut her stuff. I’m sure we’ll know a lot more about the next series by the end of the summer.
Until then, we’ve still got Series 10 to look forward to, casting rumours to be bombarded with, and my favourite scene from Capaldi’s run (so far) to watch…
