Agents of SHIELD: “Wake Up” Review (Season 4, Episode 11)

“Wake Up” was one of Season 4’s strongest entries thus far thanks to some fantastic developments on the LMD May storyline front. I could write a whole review just on that. In fact, MAYBE I WILL. But, yeah, I’ll still talk about all the other stuff too.

The two versions of May running around the series right now had strong outings this week.

It was exciting to see Real May finally escape from Radcliffe’s lab, impale Aida on a fireplace poker, and then make her getaway. But things are never that easy are they? Nope. It was all part of her Radcliffe-given daydreams. It was something I really wasn’t expecting until Aida outright told May “This isn’t real.” Looking back, I’m feeling stupid because there were a few big hints. May actually being awake at the start, the total convenience and perfect timing of her escape, the seemingly endless staircase, and, oh yeah, the way the second Aida was thrown out of the window. It was a great payoff to Radcliffe’s discovery concerning May last week. The biggest blow of them all came at the very end, with May having ben given a new daydream: Being back in Bahrain and actually saving the girl instead of killing her. That hurt. It’s a heartbreaking “What If?” idea, ne which I’m hoping continues next week.

Meanwhile, Robo-May was coming to grips with her metal existence, and even went to go confront Radcliffe about it in my favourite scene of the episode. Radcliffe tells her of her purpose and reveals that she can’t spill the beans to Coulson or hurt Radcliffe because she’s been programmed to not want  to. That’s a great idea, honestly. To make things all the more interesting, C-3PMay seems to have accepted her mission and is going for it with Coulson. I wonder when exactly the penny will drop for Coulson and company, but until then, I’ll happily watch May-ta mess around with SHIELD for a bit.

Where the penny did drop for the SHIELD crew was Radcliffe and him being behind the first Aida’s betrayal. Fitz’s interest in Aida’s head wasn’t an obsession, but an investigation. So Radcliffe’s house is stormed and he’s arrested. But things are never that easy, are they? Nope, because he’s an LMD too. At this point. I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone was an LMD. In all seriousness, it was almost hilarious learning how three steps ahead of SHIELD Radcliffe was, and him working with and leaking information to Nadeer is a clever way to tie the two storylines together. Now, we just have to figure out who “the Superior” is…

Other Thoughts

  • Wow. Everything from the winter finale to now took place within 5 days? That was fast.
  • I was dreading the idea of having to go through several episodes of, let’s face it, pointless FitzSimmons relationship drama, only for it to, I assume, stop before it could begin. Yay!
  • Speaking of relationships, the Mack/Elena storyline was short, yet poignant. I have a feeling Mack’s late daughter will play a role somehow later in the remainder of the season.
  • “The Superior” will probably turn out to be a popular character from the comics, but if it’s a returning character and I have to guess? Maybe it’s Ian Quinn? That’s all I got.

Rating: 9.2/10 hot stone dreams

Next week, Patton Oswalt returns as the seemingly infinite Koenig brothers…
