Initially, I was going to do a "May I Recommend" post just on What We Do in the Shadows, but then I watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople over the weekend and decided to do a double-bill.
Both films are directed by Taika Waitit and are two of the funniest movies I've seen in a while.
What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary centered around a group of vampires living in a New Zealand flat. The film chronicles their life at home, their nights on the town, their "vampirizing" of a guy named Nick, their encounters with werewolves, and their unlikely friendship with a legend of a man named Stu. Not only is Shadows gut-bustingly hilarious and incredibly creative, but it's also pretty heartwarming when it touches upon the friendship between these guys.
Watch this if you like: Mockumentary-style films and shows (ie. The Office, Parks and Rec), vampires, vampire movies, werewolves, deadpan humour, masquerades, worms, spaghetti, Jemaine Clement, dirty dishes, hats, tables.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople tells the story of Ricky Baker, a recently-adopted 12-year old who ventures into the New Zealand bush after an unforeseen tragedy. He is tracked down by his caregiver, Hector (played by Alan Grant himself, Sam Neill) and the two become the targets of a national manhunt as they travel further into the bush. It's a bout as hilarious as Shadows, but Wilderpeople strikes a perfect balance between the comedy and the serious. It's a movie that made me depressed in one scene and made me laugh out loud in the very next, but it never feels intruding or inappropriate. It's, in my opinion, the best film I've seen of 2016 so far.
Watch this if you like: Buddy films, New Zealand scenery, wild boars, great Lord of the Rings references, psychos, eels, kickass birthday songs, car chases, wildebeests, haikus.
Thor: Ragnarok is gonna be great.
