Agents of SHIELD: "Meet the New Boss" Review (Season 4, Episode 2)

Good gravy, we're moving at breakneck speed here. "Meet the New Boss" was a considerably quieter episode compared to last week's premiere, but it still made some fascinating leeway into this season's story arc. Or at least the "Ghost Rider" portion of it.

Let's break it down.

First, there's our not-so-long awaited meeting with the new director, Jeffrey Mace. There were times when I wanted to give him a good knock on the jaw, and other times when I thought he was a pretty good guy, and that's all thanks to Jason O' Mara's performance. The reveal that Mace is an Inhuman really took me by surprise, but it makes perfect sense with what's going with the whole Inhuman situation. It'll be interesting to see where this character goes and how his Inhumanity will affect the story.

Second, Daisy's meet-up with Robbie. That was great. What was even greater was the fact that the tussles the two had throughout the episode weren't the best parts. I loved the scenes with Daisy and Robbie talking and discussing stuff and threatening each other. So tense! Both Chloe Bennett and Gabriel Luna were on their A-game. Daisy and Robbie's new "partnership" of sorts was a fun development.

Then there's the mystery surrounding those spirits and their effect on May. I was surprised at how much we learned about these guys. Yes, there's still an awful lot to learn, but the episode covered quite a bit of ground. It seems like the female one (Lucy, right?), was a part of/in charge of some vague experiment along with several other individuals, now also in ghost-form. It was a bit frustrating to hear them talk about "him" and not get a definitive answer as to who "he" is, but I guess that's the point. It was a nice little twist to have Ghost Rider be connected, and possibly responsible, in some way, and his and Daisy's crossing over into Fitz and Mack's little adventure was entertaining.

Now for poor May. After three seasons of coming out mostly in tact (unless you count Andrew's death last season), it seems, well, right to have her deal with a problem like this. May's descent into madness was a bit heartbreaking, especially when Coulson lured her into the trap, and she didn't look all that healthy at the end. It dies look like she'll get some treatment for her haunting next week.

Other Thoughts:
  • It seems like there were a few Doctor Strange connections this week. There's the ghost-hub-thing that Fitz mentions is in New York (Sanctum Sanctorum?), I'm seeing people point out that the ink-y faces May sees bear a striking resemblance to the makeup on Mads Mikkelsen's Kaecillius, and apparently the book the ghosts speak about is Strange-related too.
  • Nice to get a Peggy Carter shout-out.
  • Daisy, Mack and Fitz's scene on the jet was great, with great performances from all three actors.
  • Was I the only one who couldn't help but get flashbacks to the Daredevil/Punisher rooftop debate while watching the Daisy/Robbie garage debate?
Rating: 8.4/10 "broken" engines

Next week, there's a blackout of some kind and some more Inhuman drama. Also, we get back to Radcliffe and Aida.
