The Five Bits (July 24-30): Han Solo, The Rocketeer, Infinity War, Marvel on Netflix, and Supergirl

The Bits are back. Back again.

1. A Han Solo Trilogy Could Be a Thing

So with the Han Solo standalone film set for 2018 and Alden Ehrenreich confirmed to take on the role of the iconic nerf-herder, it seems as though Disney and Lucasfilm have already begun programming their hyperdrives for the future.

Ehrenreich has signed on for three films, which means that Disney is likely planning to develop a trilogy of films centered around good ol' Han if the standalone film does well.

Of course, I can't really say, at this point, whether this is a good idea or not, but I'm kind of leaning towards good. It makes sense for the studios to plan ahead, without getting too ahead of themselves. If the film does well, financially and critically, then why not do another one or two? Anyways, we still have to wait just less than two years for the Solo film (GET IT?!?!) , so we'll see how things turn out then.

2. The Rocketeer Gets a Reboot

The 1991 cult Disney film, The Rocketeer is finally getting a follow-up. Well, a reboot. Actually, a sequel. How about a sequel-reboot?

The new film will have a new, female, African-American lead taking up the mantle of the Rocketeer, and will be titled The Rocketeers. Max Winkler and Matt Spicer are writing the script and there's no release window yet.

I have to admit that I haven't seen the original Rocketeer as of yet. It's been on the top of my watchlist for a few months now, but I haven't been able to find it on DVD or Blu-ray. This news is getting me itching to watch it, though, so I might look at buying a digital copy.

3.  The Infinity War Shuffle

During the press tour for Civil War, Anthony and Joe Russo revealed that that the two Infinity War films would be very different from one another and that the Part I and Part II subtitles were simply placeholders until different titles could be found.

So Marvel has revealed that only the first film will be titled Infinity War, while the second, still scheduled for 2019, is now being referred to as "Untitled Avengers Film." Despite the soon-to-be differing titles, both films will follow the same arc while, again, being different from one another.

It's a tad confusing, I know. But it is interesting. Perhaps the first film will be Earth-based, with the second being cosmic-based? I don't know. Only time will tell...

4.  Netflix Offers Glimpse at the Marvel Schedule

Marvel and Netflix have a bevy of projects ahead of them. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher. And on top of all that, there's the second season of Jessica Jones and the third season of Daredevil. In other words, a full plate.

At last week's TCA press tour, Ted Sarandos, the Netflix Chief Content Officer, offered up a loose look at the Marvel release schedule. On September 30, we're getting Luke Cage; in 2017, it's Iron Fist and The Defenders; then Seasons 2 and 3 of Jessica Jones and Daredevil in, presumably, 2018; and it seems as though we still have to wait quite a while for the Punisher series, though we did get a tease that he'll crop up in The Defenders

Also, if you were hoping that Netflix would up the annual show quantity from two to three, Sarandos says that producing shows at the speed require for that would potentially dampen the quality, but they are investigating ways to decrease the downtime between seasons. Do whatever you need to do, guys at Netflix. I'll still be in.

5.  Supergirl Will Be the Focus of the Four-Way CW Crossover

As previously reported, this year's DC CW show crossover will be a massive one between Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. Now we've got a good idea as to how it will play out.

According to Marc Guggenheim, an executive producer on Arrow and Legends, the crossover will see Supergirl facing a threat that will send her to the Arrowverse and will appear on The Flash, then Arrow, and then Legends of Tomorrow.

It sounds like a good, simple idea, and better than just throwing the cozens of characters into one, huge story. And the focus on Supergirl and her interactions with the different casts should be a ton of fun.
