The Five Bits (July 10-16): X-Men, The Flash, Star Trek 4, Sherlock and Rogue One

I was sort of expecting this edition to be entirely Star Wars themed because of Celebration London, but we didn't get the reveals we hoped for, so it's a regular edition this week. Woo!

1.  Another X-Men Show on the Horizon...

After FX's Legion was given a series order last month, another X-Men series is being eyed by FOX.

A pilot has been ordered for the new series, which will be another collaboration between Marvel TV and FOX. Nothing specific was revealed about the new series, except that it will be an action-adventure show revolving around a mutant child and her family who go on the run and join a group of mutants. Marvel's Jeph Loeb will be producing the series alongside Matt Nix and Jim Chory.

Want to do some kicks and giggles speculation? If this takes place within the rebooted timeline of the films, maybe it could be an origin story for one of the mutants? Maybe Rogue? If it's a separate entity like Legion, my money's on it being an origin series for Xavier or Magneto. Or, it could focus on a mutant we've seen little to nothing of in the films (Jubilee??). It's a bit too early to start making bets, I know...but it's fun!

2.  Kid Flash Revealed!

After a lot of build-up and teasing in Season 2 (and a disappointing lack of payoff in the finale), Keinyon Lonsdale's Wally West will officially be suitng up as Kid Flash in Season 3 of The Flash.

It seems likely, though, that this will be the Wally West/Kid Flash of the Flashpoint timeline created by Barry in the finale of Season 2, since the CW stated that the pictures released are from the Season 3 premiere (which, in case you missed it, is called "Flashpoint.")

Regardless, it's nice to finally see Wally as Kid Flash, and, if this is the Flashpoint version of Kid Flash, perhaps we'll see Wally suit up in the prime timeline at some point?

3.  Star Trek 4 Bits!

Star Trek Beyond is out on Friday (Hype!), and some details on the fourth film in the rebooted series have been revealed by JJ Abrams.

First, Chris Hemsworth will return as George Kirk, and the movie will bring him and Chris Pine's James T. Kirk together. So, maybe it's a time travel story next time around? Into Darkness was The Wrath of Khan, so maybe this can be The Voyage Home? That would be cool.

And second, on a bit more of a somber note, Abrams confirmed that the late Anton Yelchin will not be recast for the fourth film, believing it would be disrespectful to the Chekov actor's memory. So this probably means Chekov will be written out of the franchise in some way. Yeah, I'm sad now too.

No director has been confirmed yet, but Abrams will return to produce and JD Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. Also, no release date yet,  but I think we can expect this for 2019.

4.  Sherlock Series 4: The Final Series?

The fourth series of Sherlock is currently filming and eyeing an early 2017 start date, and it could be the show's final series, according to Steven Moffat. Emphasis on could.

According to the Moff, it's become increasingly harder for the BBC to book Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, given how the two have become quite busy since the first series of Sherlock. Moffat also says that their willingness to return should make it clear that they're not doing just for the money.

Before you get riled up, nothing's set in stone, and part of me feels like Moffat is toying with us a bit here, which is classic Moffat. But his reasoning makes sense, so we'll have to wait and see. If it is indeed the final series, hopefully it can wrap up things nicely.

5.  The Rogue One Celebration Reel and Other Stuff.

As I mentioned earlier, Star Wars Celebration was in London over the weekend and, in terms of "big reveals," we were sort of short-changed. There were a few fun little details about Rogue One (including a pretty heavy spoiler), Episode VIII, and the Han Solo standalone film (which will be covered in next week's Five Bits), but nothing internet shattering.

Back to Rogue One, a second trailer was shown to those in attendance at the panel, but we at home will have to wait a bit longer for it. What we did get was a pretty sweet poster and a great behind-the-scenes reel, which gives us a few glimpses of what the movie has in store for us.

If you're getting really anxious over seeing another trailer, I think we should expect one to be out just before Suicide Squad is released. Maybe. Most likely. I don't know. Perhaps?
