The Five Bits (June 12-18): Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man Video Game, Marvel at Comic-Con, Doctor Who, and DC TV.

There's a surprisingly hefty amount of Spider-Man and DC news this week. Let's get into it!

1.  Some Spider-Man: Homecoming Casting News

As Homecoming begins production, more of the cast has been revealed.

Donald Glover (aka Troy from Community) has joined the cast in a secret role. Coincidentally (or is it?), Glover was a fan-favourite to play the Miles Morales version of  Spidey in The Amazing Spider-Man a few years back. He also voiced Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. Could he be playing Miles on the big screen too? There might be an age problem, but I'd say it's perfectly within reason. I saw someone online suggest the Spectacular Spider-Man version of Eddie Brock, who was basically Peter's adopted brother before turning into Venom, which is another cool idea.

Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus) and Martin Starr (Silicon Valley) also joined the cast this week.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is out on July 7, 2017. It's directed by Jon Watts and also stars Tom Holland, Marissa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Kenneth Choi, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, and Michael Barbeiri.

2.  Hey! It's a Spider-Man Video Game!

I'm not big into video games, but I figured this would tickle some fancies.

Marvel and Insomniac Games are developing an open world Spider-Man video game for the PS4, and it's due out next year. At E3 this week, they revealed the first trailer for the game:

The game will apparently serve as the first entry in a Marvel Video Game Universe (MVGU?), and no future games are expected to be set in the Cinematic Universe. I mean, it is the Cinematic Universe anyway.

3.  Marvel's Returning to Comic-Con!

San Diego Comic-Con is almost upon us, and Marvel Studios is set to return to Hall H this year after sitting outlast year's event.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn confirmed that Vol. 2 will have a presence there, as will Doctor Strange, as revealed by director Scott Derrickson.

Marvel's absence last year made sense. Civil War was already set to be promoted at the D23 Expo, and besides that, they had really nothing major to show off. But this year, there's Guardians 2 and Doctor Strange, and we could also get some early looks at Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, which will be filming as the Con starts. And maybe, just maybe, we'll get some details and concept art for Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Infinity War, and Captain Marvel.

Anyways, I'm getting ready to be both excited about all this and sad I don't get to be there to see whatever footage they show off.

4.  Matt Lucas Returning to Doctor Who, and More News About Series 10.

The tenth series of Doctor Who will begin filming next week, and the BBC has announced that Matt Lucas, who played Nardole in "The Husbands of River Song," will be returning for the premiere episode.

The BBC also revealed some of the writers for the new series. Steven Moffat will be writing the first episode, and Sarah Dollard ("Face the Raven") and Frank-Cottrell Boyce will be back too. New writer Mike Bartlett will also be penning an episode.

Doctor Who will be back in December for its annual Christmas special before its tenth series begins in Spring 2017 with Peter Capaldi back as the Twelfth Doctor and Pearl Mackie making her debut as Bill. I'd imagine we'll get more details on the special and a start date for the new series at Comic-Con??

5.  DC TV Casting Bits

Goodness, there was a lot of casting news for DC this week.

First and foremost, Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) is the lucky actor who will be playing Superman in Supergirl's Season 2 premiere. Can't really say if he's a good choice or not since I haven't seen him in anything.

Arrow has cast Rick Gonzalez (Mr. Robot) to play Wild Dog, a reckless vigilante who will catch Oliver's attention. Josh Segarra (Chicago PD) has been cast in a regular role as Adrian Chase aka The Vigilante, and his character will become a major ally of Oliver's.

And Legends of Tomorrow has recruited Nick Zano (the Minority Report show) to play Nate Heywood, aka Citizen Steel, in a regular role.

On top of all that, the premiere dates for the CW's four superhero shows have been revealed. The Flash will begin its third season on October 4th, Arrow will begin it's fifth the next day (October 5th), and Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl will kick off their second seasons on October 13th and 17th, respectively.

Phew, that was a lot.
