Movies of the Month - May 2016

So with this new "series." I'm going to be giving quick reviews on the movies I watch within a given month. I'll be focusing on the movies that I watch for the first time, but I will give a "tip of the hat" of sorts to the ones I watched for, like, the upteenth time or so.

Anyway, enough with the boring explanations. Let's talk movies.

Captain America: Civil War (May 6)

Directors: Anthony and Joe Russo
Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan

Captain America: Civil War is great because it works on so many levels. It's immensely entertaining, but also delivers a compelling story and conflict. The film's greatest achievement, in my opinion, is how the feud between Cap and Iron Man isn't black and white. Reasonable arguments are given to side with both, and it doesn't make you feel bad for choosing one or the other. Both are right and both are wrong, and it all comes down to being a matter of opinion. And I love that. If there's something negative I can say about Civil War, it's that it's long and it feels long. If some scenes were trimmed down, it'd be near-perfect. I wouldn't say it's the best Marvel film so far, but it is one of the best.

Rating: 4.5/5

Salt (May 15)

Director: Phillip Noyce
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Salt was...OK. Angelina Jolie was fine, and some of the action beats were cool, but man is the writing all over the place. It's hard for me to go into detail on that statement for fear of heading into spoiler territory, but I'll say that things get convoluted as the film goes on, and something happens towards the end which doesn't line up with earlier events. I'd say if you're into, and only into, Bourne-esque spy movies, you might dig this. As for me, again, thought it was OK. Do I have any interest in seeing it again? No. Not really.

Rating: 2.5/5

The Sum of All Fears (May 28)

Director: Phil Alden Robinson
Starring: Ben Affleck, Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell

Two movies in a row that involve Russians attempting to overthrow America. What a weird coinkydink. Anyway, I liked this one. It takes a good long while for the film to really get started, but that long stretch is still enjoyable. Once things heat up (MILD SPOILERS: pun intended), there's some really great tension and build up...and then everyone hugs it out and the movie ends. I hate it when movies wrap up too quickly, and this was another offender in that crime. I still consider it a good, if flawed, espionage film.

Rating: 3.5/5

BONUS: Eagles Are Turning People Into Horses

This a short film, but I'm still including it!

I watched this a couple weeks back and its probably one of the best, if not the best, short film I've ever seen on YouTube. It's so insanely genius, especially in its first 6-7 minutes or so. It's also freaking hilarious.

It's only 15 minutes, so watch it whenever you can.

The Other, Previously Seen Movies

Star Wars - Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Doctor Who: The Movie
