That's right. I'm coming out of exile. And with good reason.
The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story landed earlier this week. And... It. Is. So. Cool.
There's a lot of speculatory meat to chew on in this trailer, so let's take a closer look at some of it.
1. Jyn Erso revealed
Felicity Jones' character finally gets a name: Jyn Erso. It seems she's a "loose-cannon"/former criminal hero, a character-type seen dozens of times in movies past. The listing of her crimes sounds like she's a new "recruit" for the Rebellion. She probably did something big enough to catch the eye of Mon Mothma, who then brings her to Yavin (or what looks like Yavin) and tasks her with stealing some sweet sweet superweapon blueprints. Speaking of the Death Star...
2. That's no moon.
This shot of the Death Star is cool and all, but I love how the way the Star Destroyers look as though they are the original props. This looks like a shot from A New Hope magically converted into crisp HD. And that's spectacular.
3. Grand Admiral who?
We get two glimpses at Ben Mendelsohn's villain, who looks to be an Imperial Grand Admiral, judging by the pack of gum/rank insignia on his uniform. Give him some blue skin and we've got ourselves a splitting image of Thrawn from the original Expanded Universe. I'm guessing Mendelsohn is playing the original Death Star Grand Moff. If that's so, and he dies at the end of the movie, it could be explained that Tarkin's presence on the Death Star in A New Hope was to take over and make sure things get back on schedule after the Rebel incursion.
4. Forest Whittaker
Forest Whittaker is a pretty awesome nab for a Star Wars movie. The trailer doesn't reveal much about his role, but rumour has it he's playing a Rebel-sympathising bounty hunter, who seems to have some sort of connection to Jyn. Hopefully we'll get some good Forest Whittaker eye at some point in the film.

5. Shadow Troopers?
Every Star Wars film featuring Stormtroopers includes some new take on their design, and Rogue One is no exception. Not only are there camo/brown-ish coloured troopers spotted once or twice on the trailer, but there's also these guys (pictured above). Rumours say they're part of a Stormtrooper death squad, tasked with tracking down Jyn and her crew. Perhaps they are to rebels what Inquisitors are to Jedi? We'll have to wait and see.
6. Meet my staff
A memorable moment is seeing Donnie Yen's apparently blind, samurai type character knock the snot out of some troopers. Like Whittaker's character, he's rumoured to be another Rebel-connected bounty hunter. Wen Jiang, who also pops up in the trailer, is believed to be another.
7. What is thy bidding, my master?
This shot has a lot of people talking. There are so many questions raised with this one moment. Who's the hooded dude? An un-helmeted Vader? The Emperor? An Inquisitor? Is it Mads Mikkelsen's character? What's the column in the center for? Why are the red guards there? I have my theories, but I'm going to keep them close to my chest for the time being. By the way, am I going nuts, or can I hear Vader breathing during this part of the trailer?
8. AT=ATs go to the beach
This here's the money shot. Not only does it look extremely cool, but it gives us a good idea of the tone this movie's going for. A Star Wars war movie.
9. Putting the Rogue in Rogue One
The last moment of the trailer shows Jyn in what appears to be a TIE Fighter pilot uniform. Whittaker's "What will you become?" VO line seems to suggest Jyn will throw in with the Empire, but I don't believe that for a second. It's more likely she's in disguise so she can infiltrate whatever Imperial base is holding the Death Star plans. Or, who knows? Maybe she does hop on the Empire bandwagon? If that's the case, this trailer just spoiled the movie and I'm furious.
