Agents of SHIELD: "The Inside Man" Review (Season 3, Episode 12)

"The Inside Man" really brought SHIELD back on track for me after last week's kinda unengaging premiere. Not only did we get an unpredictable mystery involving Talbot, Malcik and Creel, but we also got some foreshadowing for SHIELD's tie-in to Captain America: Civil War.

First up, it was great catching up with not just Talbot but Creel too, who hasn't been seen since last season's opener. Him apparently being a "good guy" now was an interesting direction, since, you know, he's a big villain in the comics. I felt like Hunter not trusting Creel and then Creel proving himself was a bit of a generic subplot, but Hunter's justified suspicion and seeing Creel fight alongside the team made it bearable. And it's always great to see Talbot and his exquisite 'stache. I really enjoy seeing him and Coulson play off each other, and the "you're the inside man" was a well-executed twist, even though I kinda saw it coming. Anyway, I'm really liking the development of Talbot's character and his relationship/budding bromance with Coulson.

As I mentioned before, some groundwork was laid down for what could possibly be the show's tie-in to Civil War. Apparently, Creel's blood can be used as a vaccine to cure Inhuman-itis. Inhiman-yness. Inhum- aah forget it. The vaccine would cure only those who haven't been mist-ified (nailed it). Think Civil War combined with X-Men: The Last Stand or the story it was based off of. It seems Daisy is more "Team Cap," believing Inhumans should be mutant Inhuman and proud, while Lincoln is leaning toward "Team Iron Man" and thinks that some Inhuman abilities shouldn't be awakened. So will these lovers (Yeah..still don't see it) end up becoming the poster children for each side of the argument? Team Daisy and Team Lincoln, if you will? That sounds very interesting, and should shake things up big time for our team.

And what review of this episode would be complete without mentioning that HOLY COW, HIVE'S FREAKIN' TERRIFYING. Brett Dalton is nailing it. He makes me uncomfortable just by looking into the camera and slightly tilting his head to the left. And that last scene with him and the skeletons. That's got to be one of the most graphic sights ever on this show, along with Jiaying's dissection last season. Cuz ew.

Other Thoughts:
  • Too many good one-liners this week. My favourites were  Hunter giving Daisy and Lincoln the couple nickname "shake n' bake," and Coulson asking Talbot to "give me a hand" and then Talbot gives him the robo-hand. Gold.
  • Are they setting up Creel to be a Secret Warrior?
  • The set they used for the symposium. It's the same set as the one form last season in the episode where May and Coulson go undercover, right?
  • Let's talk about the teams for this show's Civil War. Just for kicks and giggles. Coulson, Mack, Fitz and Bobbi would probably be on Team Daisy, while Simmons, May, Joey and Hunter would probably be on Team Lincoln. That's my guess.
Rating: 8.9/10 dresses

Next week's episode looks like one that will set-up the events of Most Wanted...
