Agent Carter: "Edge of Mystery" and "A Little Song and Dance" Reviews (Season 2, Episodes 8 & 9)

Things ramped up for our heroes this week as Peggy and the crew continued their campaign to stop Whitney Frost.

"Edge of Mystery"

After spending most of the season so far as comic relief, it was fantastic to see the serious side of Jarvis as he tended to Anna. I felt so bad for the guy that when Anna woke up, and surprisingly much earlier than I expected, I was so relieved, and that speaks volumes for how well these characters are developed in such a small-ish amount of time. And then I got frustrated when he didn't tell Anna about her inability to have any children. And when he shot Whitney. You're tearing me apart, Edwin!

Wilkes' pseudo-betrayal was one I didn't really see coming. I mean, the way he was digesting what Whitney was telling him about the zero matter, you could tell he had a lot of food for thought. His willingness to kill Peggy was chilling and unexpected, but seemed sudden and out of character, especially since afterwards I got the sense he wasn't totally throwing in with Whitney. His threat more like a set-up for the dramatic conversation between Peggy and Sousa later.

It was good to see more of Thompson, especially since he's been showing up off and on again. His rodeo with the files on Peggy didn't seem to go anywhere. Sure, it was interesting for like 10 minutes or so, but it's heavily implied that the files were fake, so why bother showing us all that? There must have been a better way for Thompson to begin doubting Masters. But it was cool seeing him confront Masters, even if it did end with Thompson forgetting the encounter.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. Because of Agent Carter's shorter seasons, some episodes almost feel like mini-movies, and "Edge of Mystery" was a fine example of this. Some fun set-up, an intense climax, a great cliffhanger. Good news is, I didn't have to wait long for the next episode...

Other Thoughts:
  • "I think you're a mass-murderer of rats." Thank you, Wilkes.
  • I thought the scenes at Manfredi's kitchen were great, especially Peggy and Sousa beating up the thugs in the background while Manfredi argued with his Grandma.
  • Howard "faxing" those designs seemed like a giant deus ex-machina to me. I can't be the only one, right?
  • I kind of feel like the moment where Wilkes floats away into the zero matter vortex was kind of corny, even for Agent Carter.
Rating: 8.7/10 Burnese mountain dogs

"A Little Song and Dance"

I know a lot of people really liked the opening musical number, but I found it pretty weird and misplaced. Like the writers had been looking for an opportunity to do one for a long time and thought this was their time. I think that if you were a fan of Agent Carter and musicals, this was like a dream come true to you. But the whole thing went for too long, seemed kind of awkward, and wasn't mentioned at all for the rest of the episode. We did see Angie again, though, and I loved that.

Things turned up after that for me after that, though, with Peggy and Jarvis' conversation in the desert. Seeing Hayley Atwell and James D'Arcy act like that together was the breath of fresh air from their usual friendly banter I didn't think I needed. And, boy was their argument heated. And there was a lot of great stuff for the two actors to work with, such as Peggy's bite at Jarvis for blaming her for Anna's injury, and Jarvis acknowledging that not telling Anna about her condition was a huge mistake.

It was very interesting seeing Thompson's scheme being played out. It was fun to see it go from something simple like "I'm manipulating Masters into helping us take down Whitney," to "I'm manipulating both so I can kill them both." And it was twist after twist with this grand scheme of his. Done sloppily, this could've been really convoluted, but I think the whole thing was done rather well.

There wasn't too much I didn't like about this episode, except that opening and I'm beginning to find Samberly annoying. I get it, you're under-appreciated. Now, shut up!

Other Thoughts:
  • Oh man, you don't know how happy I was to see Peggy beat up Masters. Who doesn't hate his guts?
  • I found it kind of annoying how no one was listening to Wilkes about him basically being a time-bomb. He went into a space vortex and came back, he's saying everyone needs to stay away from him, but everyone's all like "Oh, you'll be fine." Smarten up, guys!
Rating: 8.9/10 freaking weird musical numbers

Next week, it's already finale time! Dun dun dun!
