Here are your five bits for this week...
1. "It's the end...but the moment has been prepared for."
Steven Moffat will step down as showrunner of Doctor Who after Series 10 and will be replaced with Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall. It was also revealed that Series 10 will premiere in the spring of 2017.
Moffat's departure leaves me with mixed feelings. I think he's done a swell job in his time as head writer, giving us some of Doctor Who's most iconic stories and episodes, as well as introducing bold and new ideas to Who lore. But, I was beginning to think his time as the boss should be wrapping up. I'm fine with Chris Chibnall, though he hasn't written any Who stories that I would say are as memorable/well-written as what Moffat was writing during the Davies' era. I also have yet to watch Broadchurch. Sorry (It's on my Netflix list!). I guess it's also safe to assume that Series 10 will be Capaldi's last season as well, since I'm sure Chibnall would want to start fresh with a new Doctor and possibly a new companion.
The news that a new, full season of Doctor Who won't land until 2017 kinda stings, but makes sense given Moffat's focus on Sherlock this year. We're still getting a Christmas special in December, though, so I have to wait till then for a new Star Wars movie and a new Doctor Who. Meh.
2. Star Wars: Episode VIII DELAYED!!
Oh, the delays this week.
Disney and Lucasfilm announced this past week that Episode VIII's release date has been pushed from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. Filming has been rescheduled to begin in February.
It makes sense from a business standpoint. May is usually a busy time for blockbusters, so even though this is freaking Star Wars, I'm sure Episode VIII would've been facing some stiff competition. Also, The Force Awakens probably wouldn't have broken as many records as it did if it wasn't released in December, and it gives this December's Rogue One more space to breathe and avoid confusion in marketing.
Another rumoured reason for the delay is that the script is being tinkered with to give the new characters (Rey, Finn, Poe, etc.) more attention, but take that with a pinch of salt.
Anywho, we've got another long wait ahead of us, guys.
Related:
- There are currently no plans at ABC for a live-action Star Wars series. Aww.
- Star Wars toys earned Disney/Lucasfilm over $700 million this past year.
- More "realistic" creatures will feature in Rogue One.
3. DC pulls back the curtain.
On Tuesday, the CW aired a special that gave fans a glimpse of what DC has up its sleeve in terms of its film slate. We were given quick looks at concept art from Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps and The Flash the new Suicide Squad trailer debuted, and the first footage from Wonder Woman was revealed.
Wonder Woman looks exceptionally promising, but it is hard for me to get excited for Flash, Aquaman, etc. since we haven't seen any of those guys in this universe yet. I'm sure we'll get a look at them in Batman v. Superman, though.
4. Daredevil in Infinity War?
One of the top items on my Marvel Cinematic Universe wishlist is to see characters from the TV shows appear on the big screen, including Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Seeing as the Russo Brothers have 67 characters that could show up in Avengers: Infinity War (see last week's Five Bits), it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to think Daredevil would be one of them, right? Well, Charlie Cox thinks so too, but thinks the character might be recast for the film.
What?
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cox expresses enthusiasm about popping up in that titanic of a two-part film, but then says this:
“I have no idea [how the universe will come together],” Cox continued, explaining that “Marvel TV and Marvel Studios are two very different things. So even if the character was to appear in that film, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I would appear in that film.”

Personally, I'm taking these comments with a pinch of salt. I don't see the sense in recasting the character just because he's making the transition from TV to film. If the reason is so it won't confuse general audiences, you'll just end up confusing the fanboy/girl audiences who are going to sit there wondering "What happened to Charlie Cox?" I have a feeling this may have been something mentioned in passing to Cox by someone at Marvel, and now he's mentioning it to us, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it.
5. Thor: Ragnarok bits and pieces
Some rumours and quotes about Thor: Ragnarok surfaced this week, so here's a recap:
Mark Ruffalo, who'll be returning as Bruce Banner/The Hulk and is currently serving as the movie's unofficial hype-man, said Ragnarok will be a "road movie." Interesting.
Director Taika Waititi revealed he plans to incorporate more humour into Thor's third outing. That'll be a feat considering Thor: The Dark World had a lot of humour. Almost too much.
At the rumour mill, Cate Blanchett will apparently not be playing Enchantress as everybody, including me, thought she would. Rumour has it she's Hela, ruler of Hel, and she's going to be destroying a certain beloved hammer. Also, remember how Odin's fate at the end of The Dark World was left ambiguous? Well, rumour has it Raganarok will reveal he fled to Earth and has disguised himself as a street corner doom-sayer. As always, pinch of salt.
I still totally think Cate Blanchett's playing Enchantress, though.
