A bit late. I know. Busy week. Let's get to it.
"Better Angels" was a pretty packed episode of Agent Carter. Not only did we see Howard Stark return, but we learned an awful lot about what happened to Wilkes and Frost after the zero matter incident last week. Luckily, "Better Angels" turned out to be another solid episode.
The highlight for me this week was seeing Dominic Cooper back as Howard. Sure, his 1940's playboy persona is over-the-top at times but, dang it, he steals the show whenever he comes by. He gets all the best moments this week, like failing to remember Dottie until Jarvis mentions what she was wearing when they last met, or crashing the Arena Club. Also, it's great seeing Peggy, Jarvis, and Howard play off each other, so hopefully he'll be appearing more frequently than he did last season.
A perk about Agent Carter is, because of its shorter set of episodes per season, we don't have to wait long to see plot threads picked up again or get answers to burning questions. This week was the perfect example as found out what happened to Frost and Wilkes after they were exposed to zero matter. The reveal that Wilkes was kind of "there the whole time" was pretty clever, but the visual effect used to show him appear again was kinda corny, but that's something I can overlook. The conversation between him and Peggy towards the end was nice and really strengthened the bond between the two.
Meanwhile, Frost seems to have absorbed the zero matter and is now capable of consuming people with it. The scene where that director is sucked up by the matter was pretty freaky, for us and for poor Whitney. I'm sure her attitude towards her new "abilities" will change as she inevitably learns to control the zero matter, which will make things interesting down the road. Whitney's time on screen this week wasn't just focused on her zero matter problem, since we also saw just how manipulative she can be. She can basically make her husband do whatever she wants with a few tears and a few words, making it known that she's the one in charge in their grand scheme.
The pool-side fight scene towards the end of the episode was fun, but I think it was a bit too short. I actually think the episode would have been better off without it. It just felt like an afterthought, like the writers felt obligated to include an action scene because every episode of Agent Carter has to have one (and it doesn't). It just felt like it was too quick and out of place.
Other Thoughts:
- Thompson. Still a jerk. But I liked seeing Peggy get all up in his grill. She's going to have an "I told you so" moment with him next week from the looks of this episode's last scene.
- Peggy would definitely destroy me in a fight. Did you see the way she was demolishing that punching bag?
- Howard says his old professor's name was Abner Brody. Is that a Raiders of the Lost Ark reference? You know, Abner Ravenwood and Marcus Brody? I can't be the only one who noticed it.
- There were some meta jokes this week. Peggy scoffed at the idea of a movie based on a comic book and Jarvis lamented at the idea of being a body-less voice. Ha ha.
Rating: 8.6/10 Jarvis alarms
Next week, Peggy's taking the law into her own hands...
