Welcome to The Five Bits. This is something I've wanted to do for a while, but always slipped my mind. Basically, at the end of every week, I'll fill you in on five bits of movie/TV/geek/whatever news that peaked my interest (and are usually presented in no particular order). Simple, right?
Alright, let's DO THIS!!!
1. Avengers: Infinity War Will Probably Have a LOT of Characters
Marvel's new sweetheart directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, were at a Wizard World convention in New Orleans this past week and gave fans hints as to what their vision for the inevitably massive Avengers: Infinity War films currently looks like. At one point, they claimed that in their production office they have a board with 67 characters on it.
67.
The Russos clarified that this doesn't mean there will be 67 lead characters, but lead characters plus ones who'll have smaller roles or simple cameos.
67.
Just think about that for a sec. 67. If this two-part mega-movie is the uniting of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the brothers also hyped, then it's fair to think every character from the cosmic Guardians of the Galaxy to the street-level Daredevil have chances, big or small, at showing up. That's really exciting.
We've still got a long wait though. Part 1 is out in May 2018, but filming is scheduled to begin this summer. At least we've got a whack more Marvel movies and shows to keep us entertained while we wait.
Related Bits:
- Captain America: Civil War will have more comic relief than The Winter Soldier.
- Marvel's Damage Control sitcom will premiere this fall, and another comedy project is in development.
- James Gunn has finished the screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
2. The 2016 Oscar Nominations Are In...
The 2016 Oscar nominations were announced this past Thursday, with The Revenant, Spotlight, Brooklyn, The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road, Room, and The Big Short all getting the much-sought after Best Picture nod.
It was cool to see Fury Road get as many nominations as it did (10, to be exact), and The Force Awakens got some notice as well, though more in the technical categories (Best Editing and Best Original Score are still pretty big awards).
The full list is here.
3. Who Will Play Han Solo?
The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to direct a Star Wars Anthology film focusing on the exploits of a young Han Solo, and a possible shortlist of actors being considered by Disney and Lucasfilm to play the nerfherder has been revealed by Variety.
The actors are: Miles Teller (Whiplash), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), Scott Eastwood (Fury) , Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Emory Cohen (Brooklyn) and Blake Jenner (Glee). Young Han is also rumoured to have a cameo in Rogue One.
I can't give a personal pick for this because I haven't seen much of these actors in terms of performances, but I'm sure if you wander around a Star Wars fansite for a few minutes, you'll find an article ranking the candidates or something. Read that.
There's been a movement to get Youtuber and bang-on Han Solo impressionist Anthony Ingruber cast, but that's not likely since Disney's probably after a mildly-known hearthrob who can attract the attention of middle/high school girls.
Whatever the outcome, I'm sure there'll be some internet backlash.
Related Bits:
- Darth Vader might appear in Rogue One, voiced by James Earl Jones.
- Rey's instant bread in The Force Awakens? Yeah, that was a PRACTICAL effect.
4. The Mid-Season Trailer for Star Wars Rebels is EPIC
Lucasfilm revealed the mid-season trailer for the second season of Star Wars Rebels and HOLY COWWWW.
I won't say anything more, since there might be some spoiler-wary fans out there (I'll only put that sweet crossguard lightsaber shot above this blurb), but the trailer is right here if you're interested.
If you're as big as a Star Wars fan as I am and you haven't at least given Rebels, or The Clone Wars, a peek, you're missing out on the fun, bud.
5. The Media Misquotes Miller
Besides the Oscar nods for Fury Road, it was still a roller coaster week if you're a fan of George Miller and Mad Max.
At the beginning of the week, Miller expressed interest in exploring the character of Furiosa in another Mad Max film, which is exciting.
But then, two days later, he claimed he was done with Mad Max, saying the films end up taking way too long to film. Aww, too bad. But, wait, then why did he say he wanted to-
Whoops! He was misquoted! Turns out, he's still got two(!) more stories about everyone's favourite Road Warrior in the pipeline, but they won't be his next projects. Phew.
Take a break, George. You've earned it.
Those are the Five Bits for this week. Tune in next week for, uh, another Five Bits?
Noah
