Happeh Gnu Yeer!!
Simply put, this is a list of the movies I'm looking forward to the most this year. Some big movies others might be looking forward to aren't on this list, but that doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to them or I'm not gonna give 'em a watch at some point in the next year. Remember, I'm a poor college student.
Now that we've cleared that up, let's dive in...
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25th)
Starring: Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Momoa
Points of Interest:
- Batman. Superman. Same frame. Darn cool.
- Wonder Woman too.
- From what we've seen, Ben Affleck will probably make a great Bruce Wayne. He's got the charm for Wayne, and the gruffness for Batman. And the chin.
- I am more of a Marvel fanboy, but it's still exciting to see DC finally get the ball rolling on their own cinematic universe...
Points of Disinterest:
- ...but I can't help but feel this movie was only made because Warner Bros. saw the money The Avengers was making and thought, "We want that."
- That last trailer did reveal a bit too much.
- Even at this stage, the plot seems very predictable. Batman and Superman will fight, stumble upon or awaken a new threat, and use the power of teamwork to defeat it.
- Zach Snyder loves him some good ol', unneeded cataclysmic destruction!
- Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. I just don't see it.
Scale of Anticipation: 7/10
Captain America: Civil War (May 6th)
Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johannsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland, William Hurt, Emily VanCamp, Martin Freeman
Points of Interest:
- It's a new Marvel movie. There's one really good point.
- We get to see a classic Marvel story play out in the MCU.
- Ant-Man's back already! And Spider-Man and Black Panther are introduced. Woop!
- It looks like there'll be some really interesting character development for Cap, Iron Man and Bucky, as well as some of the other major players.
- Action looks great. Like, seriously great.
- Anthony and Joe Russo did an excellent job on The Winter Soldier...
Points of Disinterest:
- ...but I really hope the movie doesn't crumble from the amount of major characters returning and being introduced in Civil War. How well it works here will either make me more worried or more excited as to how the even bigger Infinity War films will work out.
- Will the story be able to remain Cap-centric despite all these beloved characters running around and punching each other?
X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27th)
Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Oscar Isaac, Rose Byrne, Lucas Till, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Olivia Munn, Ben Hardy, Hugh Jackman (probably)
Points of Interest:
- Bryan Singer hasn't made a bad X-Men movie, and Days of Future Past was compelling and fun at the same time.
- I'm a big fan of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender's Xavier and Magneto.
- Seeing younger versions of Jean, Cyclops, Storm, and the rest of the gang will be interesting. They look to be rather well cast.
- Quicksilver! Love that guy!
- Oscar Issac. BAM.
Points of Disinterest:
- From the trailer, it looks like Apocalypse is going to be bringing about...well...the apocalypse. Hopefully, the movie doesn't go all Man of Steel.
- Apocalypse's design does look a bit off.
- It's set in the 80's, right? Shouldn't the X-Men costumes be really bright and colourful? Why are they always black and leather?
Scale of Anticipation: 8.5/10
Star Trek Beyond (July 22nd)
Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella
Points of Interest:
- It looks like we're getting a story more in tune with the original series. The crew is stranded on a mysterious planet with some strange new beings.
- The cast and crew have said that this new movie is aiming to mimic the fun of Guardians of the Galaxy, and when is that ever a bad thing?
Points of Disinterest:
- I guess the music in the trailer wasn't what I would expect to be in a Star Trek movie trailer, but that really shouldn't make anyone trash this movie 6 months before its release.
- I'm not a fan of the Fast and Furious movies. At all. So Justin Lin serving as director has me a bit worried, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.
Scale of Anticipation: 9/10
Suicide Squad (August 5th)
Starring: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Scott Eastwood, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adam Beach, Common, Ben Affleck (probably)
Points of Interest:'
- I love the idea behind the Suicide Squad; criminals and super-villains being forced to work for the government.
- The cast looks solid.
- The film's cinematography is breathtaking. David Ayer's gonna rock this.
- It looks like DC's response to Guardians of the Galaxy, but it doesn't look like they're trying really hard to be exactly like it, which is nice.
Points of Disinterest:
- I'm not sure what to think of Jared Leto's Joker at the moment. I obviously need to see more before I say he's good or bad.
Scale of Anticipation: 7.5/10
Gambit (October 7th)
Starring: Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux
Gambit will probably be delayed until 2017 at the earliest, since there hasn't been any filming as of yet. Anyway, Gambit's one of my favourite superheroes, Channing Tatum's a great choice (though I think Taylor Kitsch still did a good job in X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and they've got the director of Edge of Tomorrow. So, yeah, looking good, I guess.
Scale of Anticipation: TBD
Doctor Strange (November 4th)
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Michael Stuhlbarg
Points of Interest:
- Marvel.
- Benedict freakin' Cumberbatch is the PERFECT choice for the Sorcerer Supreme, hands down.
- Also a big fan of Chiwetel Ejiofor. Loved him in Serenity and The Martian.
- This sounds like it's going to be very different from anything in the MCU so far. Possibly even crazier than Guardians of the Galaxy.
Points of Disinterest:
- None.
Scale of Anticipation: 9.5/10
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 16th)
Starring: Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Jiang Wen, Jonathan Aris
Points of Interest:
- A war movie set in the Star Wars universe. Need I say more? Fine...
- Showing us how the Death Star plans got stolen is a good place to start the Anthology series.
- Great cast choices. But if Alan Tudyk dies again...
- Should be able to hold us over until Episode VIII
Points of Disinterest:
- None.
Scale of Anticipation: 10/10
I love Star Wars.
