Agents of SHIELD: "Devils You Know" Recap/Review (Season 3, Episode 4)

The hunt for Lash begins! This week's SHIELD was another strong episode. We got new information about the character of Lash and one intense climax featuring May, Hunter, and Ward.

Note: Because this review is late and I don't want my posting schedule to get clogged, the RECAP part of the article is gonna be really quick.

The Recap

SHIELD and the ATCU team up to hunt down Lash, who has recently killed two more Inhumans. Daisy and Mack are uneasy about this alliance, but Coulson insists it's just a means to an end, but Daisy asks "For which side?"

Hunter has been recruited by Kebo (Ward's SIC) to participate in a HYDRA mission. May voices her concern that his hunt for Ward is getting too personal.

Back at HQ, Dr. Garner is giving Simmons some therapy. As he's leaving,May returns. She tells Coulson about Hunter's mission with HYDRA and asks for back-up. She and Andrew talk about their most recent falling out. May says that she is walking out on Andrew like he did with her before, so now they're even.

Daisy is able to track down an Inhuman associate of Lash who gets rashes when another Inhuman is present (Stupid power). He says Lash has a mission and isn't killing Inhumans out of bloodlust as Mack believes. The ATCU take Rash-Man into custody. Daisy and Mack insist on accompanying them to their base. Rosalind agrees and sends Banks (the guy who'll own my wallet some day) ahead of them. Lash attacks and crashes the prison truck and kills Rash-Man. He sees Daisy, but spares her. She sees his shadow transform into a more human-looking form.

Hunter is brought to a HYDRA hideout where he finally gets his confrontation with Ward. As a shootout begins, May returns and gives Hunter some much needed firepower. Ward, hidden in his office, tells May that a few of his men are following Andrew. He slides her his phone, which has a live feed of Andrew (who is being followed by Werner and two other guys in a drug store) and Ward says that if she and Hunter leave, Andrew will live and so will they.  Hunter calls his bluff and takes off to get to Ward, who gets grazed by one of Hunter's shots, but escapes with Kebo. May looks pissed at Hunter, and she has the greatest reason in the world. We see a dead body similar to Andrew's lying in the store, which is soon blown up by Werner.

Fitz, having learned that Simmons wishes to rebuild the monolith, asks her why she wishes to return. Simmons tells him it's time he knew everything.

DUN DUN DUN!!!

The Review

  • This was another solid episode in SHIELD's third season.
  • I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but Daisy and Mack are a great pairing. Chloe Bennett and Henry Simmons have this really subtle chemistry and you get a sense of the friendship and respect the two characters have for one another.
  • Speaking of great character relationships, the Coulson/Rosalind dynamic was a highlight once again this week. We started to get a bit of sexual tension between the two ("I like it when you act tough.") and Daisy addresses it in an entertaining way.
  • We learned a bit more about Lash, his "mission", and his identity. His mission will probably coincide with what it is in the comics, killing Inhumans whom he deems unworthy of their powers, which might be why he spares Daisy. He'll probably turn out to be someone we've met before on the show. The question is "who?"
  • Seriously, though. What kind of a stupid power is "getting skin irritations when another Inhuman is nearby?" Pfft.
  • The Hunter/May quest for Ward definitely ramped up this week. I'm surprised we got the confrontation between Ward and Hunter so soon, but it shows how well the show has mastered its pacing.
  • That climax was incredibly intense. It gets my vote for "Best Action Scene" for the series so far.
  • Andrew's not dead, obviously. We don't see the body's face. What isn't so obvious is why HYDRA might want him alive.
  • Ming-Na Wen has the BEST "I'm mad at you because you may have caused my ex-husband's death" face.

  • Bobbi keeping Simmons' desire to return to the alien world a secret was totally unnecessary. We've already had enough secrets on this show. Luckily, the beans were spilled before the episode's end.
Rating: 8.5/10 laser fingers

Next week, we finally learn about where Simmons was, what she was up to, and who was hunting her.
