After a hectic week and a half of assignments and exams, I finally got around to watching the winter finale of Legends of Tomorrow. And I loved it.
“The Chicago Way” was the kick in the pants I think I needed in terms of my enjoyment of this season thus far. The first 7 episodes were far from “bad,” but I had this nagging feeling that there was a lot of things missing that I loved about the first season. I’ve talked about how much I miss Snart and Rip (who both “returned” for this episode), but I also feel like Nate and Amaya were introduced a bit too quickly and with very little development. On top of that, the show didn’t seem to be taking itself seriously, which might sound stupid considering the show is already pretty absurd. But the first season had this balance between being a time travel romp and a sometimes interesting (when it wasn’t all about that horrible Ray/Kendra romance) character drama. Season 2 has embraced the romp part a bit too much, but “The Chicago Way” definitely resurrected the interesting character drama part.
Malcolm Merlyn was inducted into the Legion of Doom, the relationship between Stein and Sara got some truly great development, the Ray and Nate duo got some hilarious moments, Mick got bugged by Ghost Snart, he and Amaya seem to have a romantic thing going on (which I wasn’t expecting, and does sort of seemed forced, but I’d like to see where it goes), and Rip was revealed to be alive in 1967 America directing a film about himself (I’m guessing he’s got amnesia. Either that or he’s just really vain).
Also, the season’s big conflict finally seems to be gaining steam, with Merlyn, Darhk and Thawne now in pursuit of Rip and a legendary spear.
So, yeah. Loved this. Hoping that this level of quality, and my love for this episode, can carry over to the the season’s remaining 8 episodes.
