This edition of Five Bits was originally going to be the five bits of news I found interesting over my extended break. But remembering to keep tabs on the stories I wanted to include proved to be more troublesome than I anticipated. Sorry.
So, instead, I present a normal edition of Five Bits. Made with love.
1. The Punisher will Return...
Netflix and Marvel have officially greenlit a Punisher TV series for the streaming service. Jon Bernthal will return and the show will be executive produced by Hannibal writer Steve Lightfoot. To celebrate, this non-revealing teaser video was released:
Frank Castle was one of the best, if not the best, things about Daredevil's overall excellent second season, so the news that he'll be making a comeback in a big way has landed gracefully upon my ears. I'm also prepared for this to be much more violent than anything we've seen in the MCU yet.
2. Wolverine 3 Casting
The cast for Hugh Jackman's last outing as Wolverine continues to grow.
Last week, Richard E. Grant (aka The Great Intelligence from Doctor Who) was cast as a mad scientist-esque character, and Stephen Merchant (known for The Office, adored by me for Portal 2) has joined the cast in an unrevealed role. He's probably comic relief, though.
The two join X-Men veterans Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor X along with Boyd Holbrook as the villain.
3. Final Apocalypse Trailer
After three or so trailers that were all basically the same thing, the final trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse finally gets me really excited. We get some more action with the various X-Men, some tantalising Magneto teases...and WOLVERINE!
I just hope I don't leave the theater with cataclysmic destruction fatigue.
The movie's out on the 27th.
4. Nathan Fillion is Wonderful
Some leaked set photos from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have revealed that Nathan Fillion is the MCU's Simon Williams aka Wonder Man.
The photos (which I won't post because legal stuff) show off a theater on Earth holding a Simon Williams film festival (Apparently in the comics, Williams became an actor after his superhero career). Fillion's face is plastered over various posters, including a Steve Jobs-esque poster for a Tony Stark biopic.
Now, before you get too excited, don't. It seems more likely that Fillion won't have a role in the movie, but this is instead a cheeky easter egg that could possibly set up an appearance from Wonder Man down the road.
What's interesting, though, is that a video from the same set shows a spaceship crashing into the same town the festival is being held, which suggests a portion of the Guardians' next outing could take place on Earth. Interesting, indeed.
5. Star Trek Boldly Goes...to Toronto.
This casual Canuck Trekkie is looking forward to this September, as shooting is set to begin on the new Star Trek TV series that month in Toronto.
It's just always exciting to learn something like this is being filmed close to home, even though I live a good 45-60 minutes away from Toronto.
Will I probably get to see any of it being filmed? Probably not. But FanExpo Canada's in September, so maybe I can expect some big Star Trek presence there? Maybe some cast members from the new show? Bryan Fuller? Who knows?
