Legends of Tomorrow: "Night of the Hawk" Review (Season 1, Episode 8)

Even though the plot of "Night of the Hawk" didn't end up making much sense, I found a lot of enjoyment in it from smaller moments and scenes.

For example, I liked the way Rory's absence was dealt with. Sure, we didn't get a concrete answer as to where he is (because he's obviously alive, right?), but the issue wasn't glossed over. As demonstrated by Jax, there's some tension between Snart and the rest of the crew now.  By the way, someone cast Wentworth Miller in a 50's gangster movie, because he fits perfectly in the time period. The scene with him and Rip posing as detectives was such a hoot.

I loved the brief scene with Sara, Jax, and Stein in the diner. The three actors have great chemistry, which made for some funny bits, like Jax and Stein bickering over Stein's vocabulary, or Sara constantly warning Stein she learned how to kill someone over days. The romance between Kendra and Ray improved in this episode too. It still feel very out of left field, but Brandon Routh and Ciara Renee's dynamic was good enough for me to but it this week.

Like I mentioned earlier, I did have some grievances with the plot. Even though I thought Savage was pretty great this week, we didn't get any explanation as to the purpose of his plans. Why exactly was he making weird gargoyle-like people? Also, I didn't get the point of including the character of Betty. She didn't do much besides ultimately lead Jax to Savage. And the subplot with Sara and Carlisle felt unnecessary and a bit too on the nose.

But like I also said before, I still really enjoyed "Night of the Hawk." It was a lot freakier than previous episodes, but it still relished in the strength of its characters.

Other Thoughts:
  • Last week we got a bunch of Star Trek references, this week we got some Back to the Future ones. When will the obligatory Doctor Who reference arrive?
  • I kinda want the recipe for Savage's tuna surprise now.
  • I read a theory somewhere that Rory might be Cronus. That would certainly make Cronus a lot more interesting. He seems to play a big part in the next episode, so maybe we'll learn a bit more about him then?
Rating: 7.8/10 fries dipped in milkshakes

Legends will be on a break for the next two weeks, but at least it's not too long until The Flash and Arrow return.

In the next episode, Sara, Ray and Kendra are trapped in 1958 while the rest of the crew battles Cronus...
