Agent Carter: "Smoke and Mirrors" and "The Atomic Job" Reviews (Season 2, Episodes 4 & 5)

Sorry again for the holdup on my review of "Smoke and Mirrors." Busy school week last week.

But without further ado, let's jump in!
"Smoke and Mirrors"

The scenes in "Smoke and Mirrors" I thought were the best have to be the glimpses into Peggy and Whitney's pasts. They showed how different the two women were (Peggy was raised in a loving family, Whitney not so much), as well as the similarities in their experiences (Peggy hides her talents but decides to embrace them, Whitney is proud of her talents but then decides to hide them). I was also surprised to realize how little we knew about Peggy's life before Cap met her, like how she was engaged or her close bond with her ill-fated brother.

The rest of the episode was pretty fun, especially Peggy and Jarvis kidnapping Mr. Hunt. Jarvis, of course, got the best comic relief moments, yelling for Hunt with an American accent and getting shot with a tranquilizer dart ("Jarvellous!"). As much as I enjoy Jarvis' comedic moments, I hope he doesn't become a full-blown comic relief character, and I feel like that's all he's been this season so far. Peggy and Sousa interrogating Hunt also proved to be darkly amusing. Giving someone an "intense cold" and then convincing them it's a fatal-within-hours disease? Peggy, you diabolical mastermind, you.

Things were pretty creepy on Whitney's side of the story, however, as she learned to control her new powers (on rats, awwwww). These scenes built up to Whitney revealing her abilities to Chadwick by killing Mr. Hunt. It was a great way to end the episode, and the fact that Peggy and company are only able to hear the murder made it all the more chilling.

By the way, that Vernon Masters guy is totally a HYDRA sleeper, right? The Arena Club's HYDRA-associated somehow, it's got to be.

Rating: 7.8/10 ponies

"The Atomic Job"

"The Atomic Job" is my favourite episode of season 2 thus far. It was an all-around fun episode that ended on a more somber note.

There was an awful lot of comedy that, luckily, didn't really feel intrusive. The scenes involving the memory inhibitor were a hoot. There was the "We tested it on Jerry!" moment, and, of course, Peggy zapping Hugh Jones with it over and over again. Then there was the slow-mo walk, Rose beating the snot out of guys, Samberly's crush on Rose, and how his cliched monologues were constantly interrupted. In any other of the comic book shows I watch, this all would've felt completely out of place, but in Agent Carter, it works just fine.

"Atomic Job"  also caught us up with Sousa's girlfriend, now-fiance', Violet. Sousa's proposal scene was cute, and was anchored by Sarah Bolger's bubbliness and the chemistry she and Enver Gjokaj share. There conversation at the end, though, when she confronts Sousa about his lingering feelings for Peggy, felt a bit too melodramatic.

Peggy's brief spat with Whitney was cool, but turned dark when Peggy got impaled on a metal bar. I was surprised to see her begin to recover that quickly. It makes me wonder whether her injury was meant to bench her or effect her in the next episode, which would be interesting, or if it was just meat to cause some friction between Violet and Sousa. We'll have to see next week.

Other things I liked were Jarvis finally getting his hero moment by disarming the bombs, and Chadwick being in total fear of his wife for most of the episode. What's he going to reveal to the Arena Club at that emergency meeting, though?

Rating: 8.5/10 slices of pie

Next week, Peggy and Jarvis must team up with Dottie to stop Whitney. What could possibly go wrong?
