Nathan returns to fill us in on the comic book origins of Jessica Jones and why he's excited for the new series...
On November 20 2015 the first season of the Jessica Jones Netflix series is going to be released onto Netflix. Unlike heroes such as Wolverine, Spiderman, and Captain America; few people know of the Jessica Jones character if they are not familiar with the marvel comic-book series. If you fit into this category, here is a quick rundown of the character and her origins.
*Mild Spoilers*
Jessica Jones story is actually closely tied to Peter Parker’s (Spiderman). They both went to the same school and Jessica had a crush on pre-Spiderman Peter Parker. When she had finally gained the courage to talk to him, he was bit and distracted by the radioactive spider. After that Jessica never really attempted to talk to Peter. Jessica's family was killed on the way home from Disneyland, when they were in a collision with a military convoy carrying radioactive chemicals. She spent the next few months in a coma, and when she awoke she was adopted by the Jones family. Jessica soon discovered that the radiation exposure that she had granted her superhuman abilities. She now had: Super Strength (It's never really specified how strong, but she can lift a two ton car with ease), limited invulnerability, and flight. Upon seeing a fight between Spiderman and Sandman, Jessica decided to use her powers for good and help those around her. Jessica’s super-heroine career never really took off until she met the Purple man, which is the main villain in the Netflix series. Through her fight with him, she is able to network to other superheroes such as Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil who together formed the superhero team The Defenders.
From what I have seen from the trailers, the Jessica Jones series is going to be very similar to Daredevil; dark and violent. One of the new trailers released by Netflix shows exactly how dark it's going to be:
The new dark vibe that is coming out of Marvel's recent TV series like Daredevil is very welcome; and it seems that the Jessica Jones series is going to exceed the darkness of both of those and give the viewers a very gritty show. The antagonist character Purple Man is one that I am very excited for because as a character he brings controversial topics such as rape and suicide to the table, and it will be very interesting to see what Marvel does with that. Also, the Purple Man is played by David Tennant, so that’s a huge bonus. Personally, I am very excited for this show; and I love how marvel is branching out and using characters that not many people know. Nobody knew about Guardians of the Galaxy until the latest movie came out; and now it's one of the most famous Marvel properties out there. Here's hoping that Jessica Jones will do the same.
Until next time,
Nathan
