I'm beginning to think the openings to my SHIELD reviews are beginning to sound too repetitive. Every week it's "SHIELD was great this week. This season's on a roll. Yay!" So, today I'll break that habit. SHIELD was fantastic this week. This season's on a roll. Yay!
Right off the bat, I liked where the episode was going. We got a peek at May and Andrew's romantic getaway in Hawaii six months prior, where May expressed her desire to take a break from SHIELDing and Andre declaring that he'll never leave her agai- Whoops! Andrew gets sprayed with some Terrigen mist while looking through Jiaying's personal belongings. Now he's got some Lash-ing to do. I thought this was a great way to follow up on last week's reveal and show us how and when Andrew got his powers.
Blaine Underwood seemed like he was having a bit of fun playing the mild-mannered therapist turned Inhuman killer, especially during the scenes told from Andrew's perspective. For example, during Daisy and Coulson's argument about the ATCU, the camera focuses on Andrew for a good chunk of it, and, with the knowledge that he's Lash, it's really chilling. The scene with May and Andrew at the college was also very well written. I especially liked how the writers were able to connect Andrew's sense of responsibility for exterminating Inhumans he deemed too dangerous to May's experience with the Inhuman mother and daughter in Bahrain.
The SHIELD/ATCU/Lincoln vs. Lash climax was exciting, especially seeing Lincoln unleash his electric powers. Daisy saving Rosalind was a bit on the nose, since Rosalind expressed her hesitation to trust Inhumans earlier in the episode. The big gut-punch was when May talked down then immediately attempted to kill the man she loved. "How did you know that wouldn't kill him?" asks Coulson. "I didn't,"answers May. May takes the ATCU's offer of having Andrew put into their unique take on a coma until a cure can be found, but everyone knows that he'll be busting out before then. Amirght?
Alright, now that Lash is out of the way, let's talk about the other stuff this episode had to offer.
The relationship between Coulson and Rosalind evolved into a full-on romance before the end of the evening. But, the episode's stinger scene reveals that Rosalind is actually working with Gideon Malick. Does she know he's a villain? Luckily, the answer to that question will probably be answered in next week's episode.
The FitzSimmons drama continued, as Simmons allowed Fitz to look at all the pictures and videos she took on the alien planet. One of her videos had her basically telling Fitz she loved him back, and Iain DeCaestecker's performance as Fitz reacted to it was quite emotional. The scene between Fitz and Simmons at the end was also very sweet. Fitz shrugs off dealing with any romantic drama between him, Simmons, and Will and insists the two of them watch the sunrise. Awwwwww.

Other Thoughts:
- Hunter and Bobbi only got one big scene this week, but it was a good one. It seems the two are giving up their vengeance quest against Ward, at Bobbi's insistence. You go, girl.
- I found that Lincoln coming to SHIELD with information on Lash out of nowhere was a bit too convenient.
- Hey! Joey's back! Hi Joey! Bye Joey!
- On the plus side, the "Lincoln on the run" plotline is finally done and over with. Also, he and Mack have a pretty good dynamic happening.
- I always hate it when a character's monologue opens with "Do you remember when...?" It means that we're going to get some cheesy analogy between a seemingly unrelated story and a character's current situation. It's so annoying to me and so cliche'. We got two perpetrators in this episode: Simmons and Andrew. Shame on you guys.
- So Strucker Jr. IS alive? Interesting...
- Fitz learns that the organization that sent Will through the portal wasn't NASA, but some ancient order. It's speculation time for people who are more comics-savvy than me!!!
- There were a bunch of great one-liners and pieces of dialogue this week. Here are my favourites:
- "It's just a simple workplace romance gone wrong." "That doesn't sound so simple."
- Coulson and Rosalind on May and Andrew's absence.
- "That's a pretty poor interpretation of a therapist."
- Coulson, after learning Andrew explains why he's killing Inhumans.
- "Really gotta commit to that shotgun-axe idea."
- Mack, while tracking down Lash.
Rating: 9.0/10 terrigen mist-laced ledgers
Next week, Roalind's dirty dealings with Malick apparently come to light...
