Three of the plotlines at play this season had some time for development in this week's episode, and, fortunately, each did a good job at it and seem to be setting themselves on very interesting trajectories.
Let's start with the week's most prominent plotline, Lincoln on the run from the ATCU and Daisy's search for him. The opening scene of the episode sees Lincoln escaping a troop of ATCU soldiers, led by Rosalind's intimidating second-in-command (Seriously. If this guy came up to meout of nowhere and demanded my wallet, I'd give it to him). Lincoln slows them down by lighting up and electrical tower and making himself scarce. Coulson is able to track him down using the tracker Mack got on Lincoln back when he confronted him in the hospital. Daisy calls him and tries to convince him to seek refuge with SHIELD, to no avail. Lincoln destroys his phone and the tracker. He is picked up by a friend of his named John. Lincoln's finally getting some much needed R&R when John sees a news broadcast warning the public about Lincoln and to alert the authourities if he's found. John complies, and the ATCU are once again on Lincoln's trail.
Meanwhile, Coulson has arranged a meeting with Rosalind to make them see eye to eye on the Inhuman situation. The two meet on the coast and share some more great banter and puns about Coulson's robo-hand. A great moment also comes when Rosalind and Coulson have an exchange about their cars...
Coulson: "What's her name?"
Rosalind: "I love my car, but it's just a car. And it's a him."
Lincoln finds out about John's ratting him out, and attempts to leave, but John tries to stop him by wielding a baseball bat. Lincoln lightly shocks the bat, causing John to drop it and begin having a heart attack. Lincoln begins to panic. Daisy and Mack arrive just as the ATCU do. Daisy finds Lincoln hiding in an unfinished apartment and they have a heart to heart, which ends in a smooch and Lincoln finally accepting Daisy's offer of asylum with SHIELD, though he insists he's not going to join them. Their time of understanding is interrupted when Mack enters, and behind him are the ATCU soldiers and the guy who may eventually own my wallet.
Turns out, Coulson and Rosalind's meeting got pretty intense. Rosalind revealed that she has surveillance pictures of Daisy, but promises not to leak them if SHIELD allows them to bring in Lincoln. She claims it's nothing personal, the President just wants results. After Lincoln escapes once again, she threatens to arrest Daisy, but Coulson makes her another offer: SHIELD's knowledge on Inhumans and their assistance in tracking them down. Rosalind accepts, Daisy's not arrested or thrilled, and Lincoln remains a fugitive.
The second storyline sees Hunter and May begin their HYDRA infiltration. Hunter arranges a meeting with an old friend named Spud, and the two promptly begin drinking. The scene where Hunter and Spud share a story with May and subtitles appear to translate their slurred British lingo was hilarious. Hunter and May want Spud to get them into a HYDRA "fight club" of sorts that is used to recruit potential agents. Hunter decides he'll be the one who fights, since if word gets to Ward that a woman with May's description kicked everyone's butts, he'll get pretty suspicious.
When they get into the seedy building where the fights are being held, Hunter finds out he'll be fighting Spud, who seems to have had some pretty nasty feelings toward his old drinking buddy. Just when it seems S[ud's going to win and dash Hunter's plans, Hunter illegally dons a brass knuckle and beats Spud up so bad, it's implied he actually killed him.
The final scenes of Hunter after the fight and in Kebo's office were appropriately unnerving. This is a guy who's willing to literally cover himself in other people's blood to get revenge. Whoa.
The final storyline revolves around Siimons and her adjustment back to life on Earth and not being hunted, which proves to be quite hard for her. It's explained at the beginning that all her senses are disorientated. This is shown with her getting jumpy at every little sound. Fitz shows concern that smey not recover as quickly as he wants her to, Bobbi assures him to have patience.
Later, Fitz and Simmons finally get to go on their dinner date, which Fitz has kept the reservation for ever since she disappeared and has made sure they're the only two in the resteraunt. Simmons thanks Fitz for saving her and breaks down with Fitz comforting her. It's a pretty emotional scene and one which lets Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge to show their acting chops.
The episode;s ending zinger is Simmons' revelation to Bobbi that she needs to find a way back throught the portal and to the alien world. Que?
Other Thoughts:
- This was a great episode, with each plotline getting enough time to be entertaining and get interesting.
- The SHIELD - ATCU alliance will almost certainly be a rocky one, but any excuse to see Clark Gregg and Constance Zimmer share the screen and some dialogue is a good one.
- Side note: The theory that Rosalind is Lincoln's mother hasn't been debunked yet. In fact, this episode strengthens it, seeing as how bent on finding Lincoln Rosalind seems to be.
- Having Lincoln still be on the run was a weird move to me. Let's hope they take this somewhere. I'm glad they're giving the character a bit more depth. Him having a friend and his reaction to killing him were good developments.
- The Daisy/Lincoln kiss was SO forced.
- The scene where John sees the Lincoln warning on TV felt kinda cliche'.
- Hunter's revenge quest looks like it will take him down a very dark path. Wouldn't it be a great twist to have him actually end up joining Ward instead of trying to kill him?
- May finally got some action. She beats up some HYDRA thugs who were harassing her...and then gloats to them about it. Sweet.
- Simmons wanting to go back to the alien world is a neat twist. My guess is that she's going back to rescue others who were also being hunted, but the answer is probably much more complicated and Inhuman-y than that.
All in all, another solid entry for the season. I'm REALLY liking where we're going.
Rating: 8.7/10 male cars
Next week, Lash returns...
